Architecture

Around 250,000 people will be passing through The Hague Central Station every day by 2025. A new, integrated station complex was opened in 2016 to accommodate this number of visitors and passengers. You will find bicycles, trains, trams, metros and buses at four levels.

The Hague Central Station has been transformed by Benthem Crouwel Architects into a bright, spacious and well-arranged hub. Trains, trams, buses, bicycles: they all converge here. A transparent and spacious building, as if it were a covered city square. With four entrances into the station, passengers can enter and leave with ease, toward both the city centre and to the Beatrixkwartier.

Features

A special feature of the station is the diamond roof: a diagonal partition with diamond-shaped roof elements. They create a spectacular interplay of shadows on the concourse when the sun is out. Besides their aesthetic role, they are also functional. This is because the ‘diamonds’ provide ventilation in the station; they open automatically on hot days, act as an awning, contribute to the acoustics, and open as smoke vents in the event of a fire. The roof is the size of two football pitches and supported by eight elegant columns, which also provide the roof’s drainage.

The 22-metre high, 120-metre long and 96-metre wide station concourse is almost entirely made of glass. The various modes of transport (train, tram and bus), as well as shops and hospitality facilities, are visible in one glance from the main concourse. The design focuses on organising traffic flows to be self-explanatory and flexible. Multiple routes are possible, with each passenger or passer-by creating their own.

The bus station is currently being renovated, so that it ties in with the station’s architecture and provides bus passengers sheltered routing. The underground bicycle-storage facilities beneath the adjacent Koningin Julianaplein is also under construction.
