Architecture

Amsterdam Centraal is a historical monument on the city side. A modern, contemporary hall has been built on the IJ side of the station.

The historic monument was designed by Pierre Cuypers. He designed the internationally renowned building together with A.L. Van Gendt. Richly decorated with ornaments. His son Jos (or Joseph) Cuypers, later designed the post-office building (the Oost) on the eastern side and the IJ building on the IJ side of the station. This IJgebouw can now be admired once again when you enter the IJ-passage through the IJhal. There the IJgebouw has been wonderfully restored.

Supervisor
The supervisor of the renovations to the Cuypersgebouw, but also of developing new parts of the stations, is Jan Benthem of Benthem Crouwel architects.

Renovation of monument and wings
Benthem Crouwel is collaborating with TAK Architecten and MerkX for the renovation of both wings in the monumental building. The west wing is the first part to have been renovated, including a light floor and new framing of the columns. The splendid wooden doors have also been restored, with beautiful waiting areas. This is to be followed by the restoration of the main concourse and the east wing.

IJpassage
MerkX and Powerhouse architects designed the passages under supervision from Benthem Crouwel. The two passages (IJpassage and future Amstelpassage) are located between the existing passenger tunnels. The passages have an atmosphere entirely of their own, especially designed for passengers and visitors with more time to spend.

IJhal
Wiel Arets architects is responsible for designing the IJhal. An huge mirrored ceiling, light floor and modern advertising panels mean the concourse is imposing and uncluttered.
