At Rotterdam Central, the abstract sculptures ‘De speculaasjes,’ designed by J.H. Baas for the old station (1957-2008), are prominently displayed on the platforms. In 2014, the sculptures were moved to the bicycle and pedestrian tunnel, and their distinctive shape has also been incorporated into the new station, including in walls, counters, and solar panels.
On the platforms of Rotterdam Central stand two abstract sculptures, also known as ‘De speculaasjes.’ These sculptures, designed by J.H. Baas, were originally part of the old station building that stood there from 1957 to 2008. Architect Sybold van Ravesteyn initially wanted to acquire a work by Henry Moore, but it proved too expensive, so Baas created something in a similar style. The sculptures, with their distinctive ribbed form, were a striking feature of the building. During the renovation in 2014, they were given a new location near the bicycle and pedestrian tunnel, where they are clearly visible from the street. Their shape is also reflected in the current station, for example in walls, counters, and solar panels.
